I have a confession to make: I am going through an… uncomfortable season right now. I am currently meeting with a support group once a week to work through our past trauma and current struggles in life, addressing any sex or love addiction that is controlling us and keeping us from living in freedom, confidence, and wholeness in Christ.
It has been SO. Incredibly. Hard.
It’s so hard to open up about something that’s been kept secret for so many years. One of these days I will tell my whole story (not with gory details, of course), but right now it’s taking everything in me to keep these words on my draft tab so I can share with you a song that has hit me at the perfect time. I know I am not the only one that has struggled with sex or love addiction, as this support group has proven (as well as others that are slowly speaking out in churches and other venues). Any sexual sin is a sin that is crippling in more areas than any other. It affects us physically, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and well, sexually. It doesn’t happen and then instantly disappear; consequences from our choices may last for years afterwards, if not the rest of our lives.
But thankfully with God, there is grace, complete healing, and unlimited second chances. It may take help from counseling or support groups to receive and experience, but it’s there.
With that being said, this song was sent to me the other day as I was working through some of the homework we had in between meeting times. The lyrics hit home as I struggle mostly with love addiction: I will do almost anything to obtain love from anyone, especially guys. My sense of worth weighs heavily on their opinion of or reaction to me and what I say or do. But as this song proves, God is able to give us the perfect love we so desperately desire. This song perfectly describes what true love looks like.
For those of you who are looking for an example of what true love looks like, here you go:
“Your love’s not fractured,
It’s not a troubled mind.
It isn’t anxious,
It’s not the restless kind.
Your love’s not passive,
It’s never disengaged.
It’s always present,
It hangs on every word you say.
Love keeps it’s promises,
It keeps its word.
It honors what’s sacred,
Cause it’s vows are good.
Your love’s not broken,
It’s not insecure.
Your love’s not selfish,
Your love is pure.Cause You don’t give Your heart in pieces.
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us…“
It’s funny how I’ve wanted to hear this cd since it came out, but never got around to it, yet God brought it into my life at the perfect time.
I hope it blesses you like it blessed me.
